One million dollar web page

Remember that Alex Tew, a 21-year-old student from Cricklade, Wiltshire, England to help raise money for his university education whose name will be written in internet history.

One million dollar web page – that is the name of the project Alex launched on August 26, 2005, the website – as it is said to have generated a gross income of $1,037,100 USD and has a current Google PageRank of 7. Naturally – because it has so many links to it – even we will provide the link to his website just in the end of this article.

The idea is very simple and yet genius. He revolutionized internet by offering yet never discovered “pixel idea”. To make things more understandable –A pixel (short for picture element, using the common abbreviation "pix" for "picture") is a single point in a graphic image. Most usually we use pixels as units of measure, in particular when using pixels as a measure of resolution, e.g. 2400 pixels per inch, 640 pixels per line, or spaced 10 pixels apart.
Alex’s home page, or to be more exact - the index page of the site consists of a 1000 x 1000 pixel grid (one million pixels), on which he decided to sells image-based links for 1 buck per pixel. The minimum amount of pixels sold would bet 10x10 – that is the smallest spot available for 100 bucks.
Whoever purchases the block (the 10 by 10 pixel unit) can design a tiny image of anything which will be posted on the one million dollar website “forever”? The buyer will also decide a link (URL) which he or she wants their tiny image to link to, so as the slogan displayed when hovering the cursor over the link.

The aim of the site, which was reached within the 5 months after its launch, was to sell all of the pixels, thus generating one million dollars of revenue for the creator.

A very simple but genius idea that made a 21 year old college student a millionaire.

The concept and the idea of pixel advertising spread quickly generating hundreds of copycat sites (such as millionpoundgallery.com, millioneuropage.com, themillionriyalpage.com, milliondirhamwebsite.com and even womanmillionddollarwebsite.com or so), all of them were significantly encouraged by the sales of a pixel script and by the fact the Million Dollar Homepage was a swift triumph. But, as mentioned in my other articles, these were a “leaving train catchers” Being first, the Million Dollar Homepage became a basically self marketing instrument as a consequence of its absolute approach and innovation. The copycat sites had absolutely no novelty and most (if not all) have failed or generated very insignificant returns.

Today internet is full of free “Million dollar webpage” scripts and it’s variations that are available for everyone’s download and need no additional knowledge to be installed.
